Selling a car in Jersey
What legal documentation do I need to sell my vehicle in Jersey?+
The primary document is the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1), used to transfer ownership. If you need a replacement, complete form VRD3 — the Government charges a fee for issuing a new VRD1.
What happens with the VRD1 at the point of sale?+
You separate the VRD1 into Part A (which goes to the buyer) and Part B (which you return to Driver and Vehicle Standards). Both parties must complete and sign their sections. The buyer must return Part A to DVS within 7 days to complete the legal transfer.
What if my VRD1 is missing or damaged?+
You must apply for a replacement using form VRD3 before the sale can proceed. The Government charges a fee. Don’t complete the sale until a valid, complete VRD1 is in hand — without it ownership cannot transfer.
Buying a car in Jersey
What documentation do I need to complete when buying?+
You complete your sections of the VRD1 the seller provides — Section 1 of Part A, plus signing/dating Box 1 of Section 4 of Part A and Box 3 of Part B. Then return Part A to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) within 7 days of the purchase to complete the transfer.
Do I need to register the car in my name after buying?+
Yes — the transfer is completed by returning Part A of the VRD1 to DVS within 7 days. There is no fee for this transfer.
What should I check before buying a car in Jersey?+
Verify the seller's identity. Check the VRD1 matches the vehicle. Review service history. Consider an independent inspection. Always test drive. Make sure all paperwork is in order before completing the purchase.
Are there any taxes or fees when buying a car in Jersey?+
Jersey does not charge GST on private vehicle purchases, and the transfer of ownership is free. You will need vehicle insurance. There are no import duties for vehicles already registered in Jersey.
Can I buy a car in Jersey if I'm not a Jersey resident?+
Yes. If you're taking the vehicle to another jurisdiction, check that location's import and registration requirements. For vehicles staying in Jersey, the same VRD1 transfer process applies.
